Turkish bath and sauna : benefits on the body

Turkish bath and sauna are among the oldest detoxification practices of the body. The heat bath is not a recent practice, it dates back to the traditions of the peoples of both the Mediterranean and the colder areas of Europe, who had already understood how important it was to cleanse the body of harmful substances. Read on to discover the benefits of Turkish bath and sauna .

The sauna: an ancient Nordic tradition

The sauna is originally from Finland and is a practice that dates back more than a thousand years ago. The custom of heating the stones and throwing water to create steam, almost certainly, had no other purpose than to make the common areas more welcoming during the cold winters. Over time it has become a tradition, which has been enriched with myths and legends, accompanied by the awareness that the heat bath can only do good for the body.

The Turkish bath: a practice of Arabic origin

The Turkish bath, which takes place at lower temperatures in the sauna and with a much higher humidity, is a practice originating in the Arab countries. In these areas, it was accompanied by other aesthetic practices, such as massages, lathering and clay treatments: since ancient times, the peoples of the Mediterranean and the Middle East have shown a great deal of sensitivity to body care. The Roman baths are “relatives” of the Turkish bath: they consisted of three rooms, with different temperatures and, the classic Turkish bath has a similar scheme. The ancient baths were called hammams and we hear about them also in the monumental opera The Thousand and One Nights.


The differences between sauna and turkish bath

The main difference between sauna and turkish bath is the way they are practiced. If the sauna is a heat bath with low humidity and therefore with a dry heat, the Turkish bath is instead a total immersion in the steam. The environments in which they are practiced are therefore different. The sauna room looks almost like a Finnish hut: made of wood, it has benches on different levels and the heat source is a stone-clad stove. In the Turkish bath, on the other hand, the benches are arranged on one level and made of marble or stone, where the main source of heat is constituted by vents that emit steam, up to increase the humidity rate by 100%. Appropriate fountains of fresh water are located in various places in the room,

The benefits of heat baths

Both the sauna and the Turkish bath allow the body to purify deeply, which is why they are always part of  the detox programs . In fact, the body needs to detoxify itself to be ready to receive aesthetic treatments. A heat bath helps to eliminate toxins that the skin has assimilated and to expel the lactic and uric acid. Furthermore, Turkish baths and saunas give relief to contractions and muscular pains, but in particular they stimulate the lymphatic system. A heat bath eliminates excess fluids, putting the circulatory system in motion, promoting weight loss and the fight against cellulite. After the heat baths the skin, in fact, returns to be naturally bright and toned.
